Newest Amate Volunteers!

Hello!
The Teen Center staff is excited that the school year has finally returned and ready to welcome all the youth back to the center!  Some new faces will greet the youth this year because the newest Amate House volunteers have arrived.  The Teen Center is excited to welcome Davidlee Klimchuk and Mackensey Carter to its staff for the 2012-2013 school year. This blog post is devoted to getting to know a little bit more about each of these volunteers and their volunteer program, Amate House.

Amate House is a post-graduate volunteer program which places thirty three young adults at various sites around the city where they volunteer fulltime for an entire year. Their mission is to live and work in solidarity with the people of Chicago. The volunteers serve at a myriad of locations including different schools, legal agencies, food pantries, and hospitals. The Amate volunteers are housed at three different locations throughout the city. There is a group living in Little Village, another in Uptown, and, as is the case with the teen center volunteers, in the old St. Maurice convent right here in our own McKinley Park.

Davidlee Klimchuk is a native of Western New York and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.  Davidlee enjoys running and biking as well as writing and reading. He also unwinds in his free time by playing the saxophone and listening to a wide variety of music. After his year in Chicago he hopes to earn a masters degree in either Social Work or College Student Personnel Administration and continue writing.

Mackensey Carter grew up in Southern California and then moved to DC to attend Georgetown University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Theology.  While at Georgetown, she was a pitcher and utility player on Georgetown’s softball team and was also involved in campus ministry. Mackensey enjoys photography, baking, bike riding and spending time with her family in her free time.  She hopes to stay in Chicago after this year and pursue a masters degree in Social Work.

Both Mackensey and Davidlee are excited to share their diverse gifts and talents with our youth this upcoming year. Both of them would love to meet the community and supporters of the Teen Center so please feel free to stop by and say hello during the coming weeks!

Thank you!
